‘English mars the importance of Hindi’

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Undue emphasis over English by the new generation parents is threatening the growth of national language, Hindi and regional languages, said Swadesh Bharati, the Chairman of the Rashtriya Hindi Academy.

Mr Bharati along with the Vice-Chairman of the academy, B.K.Mahato has been on a visit to Berhampur to make arrangements for the 3-day 20th All India Official Language Conference to be held here from Oct. 2. It is for the first time the conference is being held in Orissa.

“The opposition towards Hindi is created by the politicians for petty gains,” Mr. Bharati said. For the public Hindi has been a binding force between the country’s diverse cultures.

He also added that many South Indians were selecting Hindi as a language paper for appearing in the Civil Services Examination, which speaks volumes about its acceptance.

To promote the ideology, the Rashtriya Hindi Academy is promoting the translation of literary masterpieces in Hindi into regional languages and vice-versa, he informed.
