Sustained and adequate water release will help paddy crop in over 5,000 acres KULITHALAI: Pointing out that River Cauvery was carrying a huge quantum of water for the past several weeks now, farmers belonging to the tail-end areas of Kattalai High Level Channel (KHLC) that branches off the Cauvery in the district have urged the Public Works Department to ensure that their region gets adequate water to meet farm operations. Though the PWD (River Conservancy Division) officials have been releasing water in the KHLC, enough quantum was not being released to reach the tail-end aycut areas of the channel. In particular, farmers belonging to Kavandampatti, Kurichi, Suriyanoor, Neithalur, Inam Puliyur and surrounding areas complained inadequate water supply. “The KHLC is a little bit elevated and if the tail-end areas have to be fed, then more water needs to be released on a sustained basis. We hope the officials would ensure that for us to nurture the paddy nurseries raised to meet the demands several hundred acres in the region,” said Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association deputy secretary Kavandampatti R. Subramanian. Chinnayan of Kurichi joined his plea for more water. Farmers pointed out that it was agonising that when Cauvery was carrying a huge flow for several weeks now, their areas fed by a branch channel of the main river was facing scarcity. Sustained and adequate water release would help paddy crop to be raised in over 5,000 acres, they said. Collector T.N. Venkatesh and the PWD officials assured them that necessary action would be taken to meet their demands and ensure proper water supply in the KHLC in the days ahead. Mr. Venkatesh also said that educated progressive horticulture farmers from the district would be sponsored for a training module on horticultural practices. The candidates should be raising horticulture crops on five acres or more, should have studied at least Plus Two, and should be aged between 30 and 40. Desirous candidates could get in touch with the Horticulture Department officials, the Collector said. Mr. Venkatesh handed over a power tiller worth Rs. 1.20 lakh with a subsidy component of Rs. 30,000 to a farmer Kadambalingam of Ayyaneri on the occasion. Education assistanceHe also gave away education assistance of Rs. 600 per month to Mohanapriya of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Kulithalai, for having secured the first place in the State Gymnastic Championships held recently. Kulithalai MLA R. Manikkam, District Revenue Officer Jawahar Shanthakumar, Kulithalai RDO Anne Maru Swarna, Joint Director of Agriculture K. Rangasamy, farmers representatives including A.V. Gopaladesikan, Mahandapauram V. Rajaram, Manathattai Ilangovan and others participated in the discussions.
