Observes ‘martyrdom’ of three youths killed in police firing

REMEMBRANCE DAY: Leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League praying at the grave of the three martyrs of the Arabic language struggle, in Malappuram on Saturday. Majeed, Rahman and Kunhippa were killed in police firing in 1980.

MALAPPURAM: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) observed the 27th anniversary of the party’s ‘struggle for Arabic language’ at different places in the district on Saturday, the 17th day of Ramzan. The struggle is being remembered for the ‘martyrdom’ of three youths killed in police firing in front of Malappuram District Collectorate in 1980.

It was on July 30, 1980 (17th day of Ramzan) that the three youths Abdul Majeed, Abdul Rahman and Abdulla alias Kunhippa belonging to Malappuram, Tenhipalam and Kalikavu respectively were shot dead during a violent protest against the Government’s anti-Arabic move. The IUML observes their ‘martyrdom’ on the 17th day of every Ramzan, which incidentally is the day of the Badr, the first battle in Islamic history.

IUML district president Panakkad Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal led a ziyarat (visit) to the grave of Abdul Majeed in Malappuram. IUML State general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty; MLAs M. Ummer and Abdurahman Randathani; District Panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed and IUML district secretary K.P.A. Majeed attended the mass prayer at the grave.

IUML leader Panakkad Sayed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal led the ‘ziyarat’ at the grave of Abdulla at Kalikavu. P.V. Abdul Wahab, MP and K.N.A. Khader were among the leaders who attended the mass prayer there.

IUML leader Mohammed Kutty led the ziyarat prayer at the grave of Abdul Rahman at Tenhipalam.

Muslim Youth League State president K.M. Shaji inaugurated a commemorative meeting held later at Tenhipalam. Similar meeting were also held in Malappuram and Kalikavu.
