54.98 p.c. polling in Gulbarga district

GULBARGA: Women appeared to be more conscious about their voting rights in Gulbarga district.

They outnumbered men in exercising their franchise in seven of the 12 urban local bodies in the district.

Women voters outnumbered men in Shahabad and Yadgir city municipal councils; Shahapur and Surpur town municipal councils; and Jewargi, Gurmitkal and Chincholi town panchayats for which elections were held on Friday. Even in the other five local bodies, including Gulbarga City Corporation; Aland, Sedam and Chitapur town municipal councils, and Afsalpur town panchayat, the women turned out to vote in huge numbers.

Out of the 3,66,681 voters who cast votes for polls to the 12 urban local bodies, 1,82,860 were women.

According to official figures, 54.98 per cent polling was reported in Gulbarga district. Jewargi Town Panchayat topped with a polling percentage of 68; followed by Chincholi Town Panchayat (66.08 per cent); Gurmitkal Town Panchayat (65 per cent); Sedam Town Municipal Council (63.51 per cent); Afsalpur (59.08 per cent); Aland Town Municipal Council (57.89 per cent); Surpur TMC (56.89 per cent); Chitapur Town Municipal Council (54.57 per cent); Shahabad Town Municipal Council (53.15 per cent); Gulbarga City Corporation (52.88 per cent) and Yadgir City Municipal Corporation (51.9 per cent).

Polling percentage was low in almost all the local bodies mainly due to strict adherence to the State Election Commission’s directive to allow only those with valid identity cards to cast their votes.

Many who had come to the booths without their identity cards were sent back by the officials.

Repolling in booth number 68 of ward number 12 of Gulbarga corporation and in booth number 22 of ward number 12 of Shahapur Town Municipal Council passed off peacefully.
