HYDERABAD: Highly “disappointed” at the way the Andhra Pradesh Mahila Commission is working, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajaasekhara Reddy has ordered its overhaul and reconstitution with a fresh batch of chairpersons and members.
YSR’s displeasure
Dr. Reddycould hardly conceal his anger when the commission’s issue came up for discussion with Women Development and Child Welfare Minister N. Rajyalakshmi, at a meeting here on Saturday. The Minister announced to media later that the commission would be constituted shortly with persons of integrity and social bent. “We will see that the commission works effectively hereafter,” she declared. It may be recalled that the Mahila Commission, set up through a State legislation, has been in focus due to the resignation of its chairperson, Mary Ravindranath, following an open verbal clash with a member of the commission at Tirupati some time ago. Later, K. Renuka Reddy, a member of the commission, became the chairperson but she too faced criticism for her alleged “corrupt practices” in settling divorced cases.
The Minister said she would herself supervise the activities of the commission till the new body came in.
She spoke of the Government receiving several complaints against the way the commission members conducted themselves at a time when the women in the State kept high hopes on them.
