ISRO to expand Village Resource Centres

HYDERABAD: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has decided to expand the Village Resource Centre, the single window mechanism to guide the people of rural areas in planning the development of their villages across the country.

The VRCs, launched on a pilot basis in some villages, have been successful. The Agriculture, Health and other departments could reach out to the villages effectively and give timely advice on weather conditions, land and water resources and natural resource management.

Wasteland

According to ISRO chairman G. Madhavan Nair, information about water resources, wasteland, weather information and soil mapping could be provided to village administration through VRCs that would act as helplines. He was delivering the 39th Homi J. Bhabha memorial lecture organised as part of the golden jubilee technical convention of The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) here on Saturday. Dr. Nair said as the demand for multimedia and broadband services was expected to increase significantly, ISRO was planning to shift to Ka-band in the coming days for effectively catering to the requirement of both fixed and mobile consumers. The premier space research agency had embarked on developing a satellite, INSAT-4E/GSAT-6, which would provide satellite-based multimedia services using high power transponders in S-band.
