Kollam liquor tragedy: three more held

Number of arrests in the case goes up to 11


14 persons listed as accused

Two of the accused still at large


KOLLAM: The special police team investigating the Avaneeshwaram liquor tragedy arrested three more persons on Friday in connection with the case.

They were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-III at Punalur on Saturday afternoon and remanded to 14 days in police custody. Deputy Superintendent of Police T.F. Xavier, who headed the special police team, identified the accused as Suresh (accused number 4), Binu (accused number 6) and Mohanan (accused number 12), licensee of the toddy shop.

Following a tip-off, Mohanan was arrested from the forests at Kattapana in Idukki district on Friday evening, Mr. Xavier said. Suresh and Binu were arrested from a Dalit colony at Pandalam on Friday night.

The total number of arrests made in the case has now gone up to 11. One of the accused, Sarasamma, is admitted to Punalur Government Hospital. Fourteen persons have been listed as accused in the case. The two at large include the prime accused, Keepally Ashokan.
