Draft water policy of Assam rejected

Guwahati: A consultation of 26 civil society organisations held here on Saturday rejected outright the draft water policy of Assam in the present form that was released by the State government on August 21 and called for formation of a people’s committee to draft an alternative “pro-people” water policy.
Participants taking part in threadbare discussion aired their view that the draft water policy was an attempt to curb traditional rights of indigenous people and hand it over to the multinational corporations.
The consultation was organised by the Water Fellowship under the umbrella platform North East India Social Forum.
This was the third of a series of four such consultations.
The previous two consultations held at Jorhat and Bongaigaon also rejected the draft water policy in the present form. The fourth one is scheduled to be held at Silchar on October 4.
Briefing reporters on the deliberation at the consultation, Amrit K. Goldsmith, Bondita Acharya and Abinash Lahkar said that participants pointed out that many sections of the draft policy were inadequately defined.
