Punjab plans to provide potable water to villages

Ludhiana: The Punjab Government has chalked out a comprehensive programme to provide potable water to all villages of the State, Water Supply and Sanitation Minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia said on Saturday. He said this while laying the foundation stone of a World Bank- sponsored project named “Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation Project”. Mr. Majithia said that under the project Rs 1008.80 crore would be spent for infrastructure building, Rs 119.50 crore for community development and Rs 152 crore for project management. While the World Bank will contribute Rs 479.40 crore for the project, the rest will be provided by the Centre and the Punjab Government, he said. The Minister admitted that the “consumption of polluted water in many part of the State was causing fatal and serious diseases like cancer, diarrhoea etc.” He said that under another programme of NABARD, 21 water supply projects worth Rs 827.80 crore were already under progress and total 2296 habitations have been provided with potable drinking water supply.
