Bellary
BELLARY: Bellary district registered 61.75 per cent polling in Friday’s elections to the 10 urban local bodies comprising 5.76 lakh voters. Among the 3.56 lakh voters who exercised their franchise were 1.79 lakh men and 1.76 lakh women. The highest voter turnout was recorded in Tekkalkote Town Panchayat (84.56 per cent), while the lowest was in Bellary city (54.25 per cent). Break-upThe polling percentage in the elections to other local bodies were as follows: Hospet City Municipal Council, 62; Kampli Town Municipal Council, 73.99; Sirguppa Town Municipal Council, 79.07; Sandur Town Municipal Council, 79.01; Hadagli Town Municipal Council, 74.02; Kamalapur Town Panchayat, 77.39; Tekkalakote Town Panchayat, 84.56; and Kottur Town Panchayat, 66.75. Re-polling in ward number 29 in Bellary held on Saturday passed off peacefully with an estimated 50 per cent of voters exercising their franchise. The police had made elaborate security arrangements. Re-polling was necessitated because the symbol of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on ballot papers was the wrong one. Instead of the CPI symbol, that of the Communist party of India (Marxist) had been printed. The ballots will be counted on Sunday at the respective taluk headquarter towns. In Bellary, votes will be counted at the Government Polytechnic. Arvind Srivastav, Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate, told The Hindu that all steps had been taken to maintain law and order.
