Compensation for constable’s family

New Delhi: The family of a 39-year-old Delhi Police constable, who died seven years ago in a mishap while travelling by a bus, has been awarded a compensation of over Rs.11 lakh by a tribunal here.

The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), presided over by A S Jayachandra, held the driver of the bus, its owner and New India Assurance Co Ltd jointly liable for “rash and negligent act” and asked them to pay the amount within a month to the wife and three minor children of the deceased Harbans Singh.

Earlier rejecting the plea of the driver that the accident was not caused due to his negligence, it noted that the driver of the bus had failed in discharging his onus. It also lent credence to the version of deceased’s wife who had deposed to establish that he drove rashly despite warnings by the passengers.

Singh had died on the spot after sustaining fatal injuries after the bus, in which he was going to Jammu on February 13, 2000, hit a tree near Hoshiarpur in Punjab.- PTI
