Two sentenced for robbery in city bus

New Delhi: A city court here has sentenced two youths to rigorous imprisonment for varied terms for looting and seriously injuring three persons in a moving city bus last year. Additional Sessions Judge S P Garg sentenced Raj Kumar and Jai Prakash to seven years and five years of rigorous imprisonment respectively for injuring three persons with knives while trying to pick pockets in the bus. Relying on the testimony of the eye-witness Rajesh Gohar, one of the passengers in the bus, the court observed, “minor contradictions, exaggerations and improvements (in the statements of the witness) are not fatal to the case of the prosecution as they do not get to the root of the case.”

The third accused Satpal was acquitted on account of insufficient evidence. The fourth accused, a minor, is being tried in a juvenile court. According to the prosecution, the complainant Turanti Lal was travelling alongwith with his cousin Raj Nath in a city bus on his way to Anand Vihar from Sagar Pur in South-West Delhi. As the bus reached Delhi Cantonment, three to four men boarded the bus and stood closely surrounding the victims.- PTI
