Six new bridges for Nagapattinam

Eight more to be built with tsunami fund

174 km of State highways to be repaired


NAGAPATTINAM: Six new bridges will be built at a total cost of Rs.35 crores in the district with financial assistance from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

The construction work on these bridges will commence shortly and will be completed before the end of next year, said the Minister for Highways, M.P. Saminathan, here on Saturday.

Each bridge would be built connecting two villages viz Edamanal-Tirunagari at a cost of Rs.6 crore, Vandal-Avarikadu (Rs.13.30 crores), Manakkudi-Vaduvur (Rs.1.5 crore), Nadathittu-Govindakadu (Rs.one crore), Thulasiapuram-Sakkai (Rs.1.30 crore), Kodiampalayam (Rs.9 crores) and on the Harichandra river at Vettaikaraniruppu (Rs.2.8 crores), he said while speaking to the presspersons.

Besides construction of six bridges, eight more would be built in various parts of the district from the funds allocated for the tsunami rehabilitation fund.

Replying to a question, Mr. Saminathan said that during the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) regime in the State, the World Bank had refused to accord permission for construction of four bridges in the district.

Mr. Saminathan said that State highway roads for a stretch of 174 km would be repaired and improved in the district for which nearly Rs.36 crores had been allocated.

244 km improved last year

Last year, 244-km length of highway roads were improved in the district at a cost of Rs.38 crore, the Minister added.
