“Law and order will be maintained”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Chief Secretary, L.K.Tripathy, on Saturday asked the police and district administration to maintain smooth movement of transport and citizens during the ‘hartal’ on October 1.

In an official release, he said that law and order would be maintained and rights of citizens protected.

“Maintain peace”

“Any public act of violence will be firmly dealt with,” he warned, and requested all concerned “to remain calm and maintain peace.”

The Chief Secretary instructed authorities to arrange for open-line patrol with immediate effect and regular supply of milk and other essentials.

Besides protection to courts, they should ensure the functioning of essential services like telecommunication, water supply, milk distribution, power supply, fire services and newspapers.

Police presence

Maintenance of visible police presence and action against anti-social elements indulging in vandalism also figured in the list of instructions circulated to the authorities.

Security should be provided to railway stations, bus depots, roads, hospitals and educational institutions, he said adding that police control rooms would be activated to take stern and timely action and to ensure that the ‘hartal’ passed off peacefully.

Southern Railway said it would maintain normal services on the bandh day.
