Water realisation from Kandaleru touches 3.2 tmcft

CHENNAI: Over the last two months, Chennai received water sufficient to meet four months of its drinking water needs, from the Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh.
The water realisation at Poondi reservoir touched 3.2 thousand million cubic feet on Friday.
A Public Works Department official said this was the highest during the season since the implementation of the project in 1996. Last year, during the same period, 2.9 tmcft water was realised.
The entry point at Uthukottai received 680 cusecs of water on Friday through the Kandaleru-Poondi canal. But the Poondi reservoir received an inflow of 790 cusecs due to rain in the catchments.
A Chennai Metrowater official said the combined storage of the four city reservoirs had now touched about 6 tmcft.
The present storage was enough to take care of the city’s needs for seven to eight months.
