KEA to set up development fund for new colleges

Another fund being created for poor students

New colleges will be provided assistance to buy books for libraries
Poor meritorious students to be given aid for four years

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), the new avatar of the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell, will set up two development funds, one to help the new government medical and engineering colleges buy library books, and another to sponsor meritorious and economically weak students.

Six new government medical colleges and five government engineering colleges will get Rs. 5 lakh each to buy books for their libraries. The Directors of Medical Education and Technical Education will identify the books to be acquired, Pre-University Education Department Director S.G. Hegde said here on Saturday.

While the funding for libraries would take place by the next academic year, the plan to sponsor the education of economically weaker students for four years was yet to be given a final shape.

The Government was working on the income generation model, said Mr. Hegde.

Mr. Hegde said the KEA would be managed by a 16-member Governing Council with the Higher Education Minister as its chairman and Medical Education Minister as co-chairman.

After the conclusion of this year’s admission process for undergraduate professional courses, 382 BDS, 384 ISM & H and 1,692 engineering seats remained vacant under the CET quota. Only one MBBS seat was vacant, Mr. Hegde said.

A total of 992 MBBS seats, 849 out of the 467 BDS seats, 765 out of the 1,149 ISM & H seats and 29,791 of the 31,483 engineering seats were selected by the CET candidates this year.

Also filled were 154 of the 252 architecture seats on offer.
