Kancheepuram Collector asked to moot suitable proposals to government
TAMBARAM: The Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department has written to Kancheepuram Collector Pradeep Yadav to discuss with officials of the Ministry of Defence, local bodies and residents welfare associations for amending a Government Order related to restriction on constructions around the Indian Air Force (IAF) installations. The GO (Ms) No. 164, passed by the Department in November 2002, had directed all urban and rural local bodies not to sanction building permits to anyone within 900 metres from the periphery of the Indian Air Force installations. The communication to the Kancheepuram Collector on September 6 has brought a ray of hope for several thousand people who own land near the Indian Air Force (IAF) Station in Tambaram, but unable to build houses owing to the GO.
The letter said the Kancheepuram Collector should send suitable proposals to the government for amending the GO in conformity with an earlier one passed in February this year by the Ministry of Defence, which had brought down the restricted area from 900 metres to 100 metres.
In the past, local bodies sanctioned building permits only when applicants possessed no objection certificates from IAF authorities, recalled A. Janakiraman, former Tambaram municipal chairman and president of Tambaram IAF 900 Metres Affected People Welfare Association.
But the GO No. 164 put an end to all construction activity. During a function in Tambaram last month, residents pointed out to Union Minister and South Chennai MP T.R.Baalu that the GO was the only stumbling block for development. Mr. Baalu assured them that a positive development would take place soon.
