Meet discusses underground drainage projects

TAMBARAM: Senior officials of Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board and Kancheepuram district administration took part in a coordination meeting on Saturday in connection with the proposed underground drainage projects for rural and urban local bodies within Chennai Metropolitan Area.

Chennai Metrowater Managing Director Shiv Das Meena and Kancheepuram Collector Pradeep Yadav participated in the meeting that was held at the office of St. Thomas Mount panchayat union in Chitlapakkam. Tambaram MLA S.R.Raja and union chairman K.Elumalai were also present.

Engineers and administrators at the district level agencies and also those at the local bodies were asked to expedite works pertaining to identification of suitable land for sewage treatment plants and pumping stations for the project.

Chennai Metrowater had floated national bids in September last inviting consultancy proposals for preparing detailed project reports to provide comprehensive sewerage schemes to adjacent urban local bodies in Chennai Metropolitan Area.

The idea was to split all the rural and urban local bodies of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts within Chennai Metropolitan Area in seven packages for implementing the sewerage schemes.

There are more than 50 local bodies in CMA limits in these two districts. Work on detailed project reports for the scheme was currently on, officials said and the meeting was held to review its progress. In those places where underground drainage project was currently on, some facilities were proposed in water bodies and public places, resulting in protests from residents and subsequently, the delay in its execution. The review meeting was to avoid such hassles, officials added.
