Offering support: Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Minister M.R.K. Panneer Selvam inaugurate the water connection at a house in Villupuram on Saturday. — VILLUPURAM: Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy inaugurated 152 permanent houses for tsunami victims at Mudaliyarkuppam, 50 km from here, on Saturday. He handed over the keys of the houses, built at a cost of Rs. 3.23 crore, to Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Welfare Minister M.R.K. Panneer Selvam. The amount was sanctioned from the Karnataka Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Mr. Kumaraswamy said that soon after the tsunami struck on December 26, 2004, Mysore Citizens’ Forum, consisting of philanthropists, voluntary organisations and savants, was formed for undertaking relief measures. It initially spent Rs. 47 lakh on providing mechanised boats to fishermen and meeting the immediate needs of the villagers. Later, it mobilised Rs. 2.25 crore for building 92 permanent houses. After Mr. Kumaraswamy became the Chief Minister, he inaugurated these houses on November 2, 2006, at his first official function. Impressed with the works done by the forum, he sanctioned Rs. 3.23 crore from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the construction of 152 more houses. The Tamil Nadu Government had provided the land and amenities at cost of Rs. 1 crore. So, the project was an example for cooperation between the two States, he said. The Chief Minister attributed the success of the project to the blessings of the savants of Suthur, Bejavara and Avadhutta Mutts, and the untiring efforts of the forum. Mr. Panneer Selvam expressed the hope that the project would perpetuate the bonds between the two States. He urged Karnataka to alleviate the sufferings of Tamil Nadu farmers by releasing adequate quantum of Cauvery water. Since Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was attending a function at Thanjavur, along with Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, he had deputed him, he said. Collector Brajendra Navnit called upon the beneficiaries to maintain the houses properly.
