CPI hails rural job scheme extension
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India on Saturday welcomed the decision to extend the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) to all districts of the country.
However, the “high drama” which marked the announcement was “manoeuvring politics,” the CPI said in a statement.
Stating that the NREGA – guaranteeing 100 days of wage employment to rural households – was a promise made in the National Common Minimum Programme, the CPI alleged that the implementation had been “delayed purposefully” for the last two years.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in his Independence Day speech, had announced the extension of the NREGA to all districts.
