First ODI called off

Special Correspondent

Chennai: The first One-Day International in the seven-match series between India and Australia was abandoned after heavy showers lashed the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Saturday.

India, chasing 308 for victory, had reached nine for one in 2.4 overs – Sachin Tendulkar (0), the batsman dismissed – when the rain forced the players off the field. No further play was possible. The umpires decided to abandon the day-night match after inspecting the conditions at 9.30 p.m.

Earlier, Michael Clarke scored a career-best 130 to help Australia to 307 for seven in 50 overs. The 26-year-old led Australia’s recovery after new-ball bowler Sreesanth took three wickets to reduce the visitors to 90 for four in the 17th over.
