Staff Reporter

Five weapons, landmine weighing 18 kg seized from the squad

KHAMMAM: Members of an ‘action team’ were among the five naxalites of the CPI (Maoist) arrested by the police in Vepalagadda forests of Yellandu sub-division on Sunday. Five weapons and a landmine weighing some 18 kg were seized from them, according to the Superintendent of Police, D. S. Chouhan, on Sunday.

Addressing a news conference here, he said that the police were on the lookout for the ‘action team’ leader, Kommu Ramaswamy, and another member of the team, Avudoddi Sreenu, who managed to escape.

Aim of team

He informed that a 303 rifle, an 8 mm rifle with 15 live rounds, a 9 mm pistol and 8 mm carbine with 15 live rounds, were among the weapons seized from them. The 303 rifle appeared to be a department weapon lifted by the Maoists in their attack on the police headquarters at Koraput (Orissa) two years ago.

The weapon which bore No-A 42801 (IV Mark-I) was in the possession of Banothu Kishan, one of the action team members.

The action team was reportedly out to kill the police personnel and targeted persons. Some of the members were involved in planting a landmine on the rail track a few months ago.

Bhattu Raghu alias Ravi, a resident of Pocharam village and deputy commander of the action team, Thotakura Sreenu and Venkatamma, a courier were among those arrested by the special party led by the Yallandu Circle Inspector, Sd Sarwar and Sub Inspectors Srinivas Jee, M. Lingaiah and B. Satyanarayana. He said the special team members instrumental in arresting the naxalites would be recommended for special rewards.
