NEW DELHI: In the light of Friday’s shocking incident involving a primary school teacher in the Capital who made a seven-year-old girl strip in front of her classmates for not doing her homework, the Delhi Government on Sunday set up permanent panel to address the issue of corporal punishment in schools. Apart from instituting the new panel, the Government also ordered a probe into the incident and asked the Education Department to investigate the case. Nineteen-year-old school teacher, Neha, allegedly forced the nursery student to strip and made her stand on a desk for failing to complete her homework. On reaching home the girl narrated the incident to her brother who lodged a police complaint against the teacher after receiving minimal cooperation from the school authorities. The police later arrested the teacher under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code and the Juvenile Justice Act. 3-member committeeThe three-member committee will be empowered to investigate cases of corporal punishment in the future. All cases of corporal punishment will be dealt by this panel and it will be a permanent set up. PTI adds: National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Shanta Sinha said the panel was waiting for a report from the Government in this case. “It is not the teacher alone who should be made responsible, the school authorities should also be held responsible,” she said. Terming the incident “unfortunate and an abuse of child rights,”, Ms. Sinha said the Commission had sent a reminder to all State Governments to submit the action taken report on the guidelines to deal with corporal punishment. “This incident is not an isolated one and we are worried that more such incidents are occurring,” she added.
