Karunanidhi, DPA leaders to observe fast today

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, along with leaders of other parties of the Democratic Progressive Alliance, will observe a fast here on Monday on the Sethusamudram project.

Announcing this on Sunday after the Supreme Court order against a bandh call given by the DMK and its allies for Monday, Mr. Karunanidhi made it clear that the fast was not against the order.

The fast before the State Guest House would highlight the presence of hurdles to Tamils reaping the benefits of a development project.

“Efforts to remove such hurdles have been stalled now. As a mark of anguish, we are inflicting pain on ourselves by going on a fast,” he said.

N. Varadarajan, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), called upon the party members to participate in the fast.
