Teaming up for a healthy heart

KOCHI: Free heart check-ups and discussions on creating awareness of better heart care marked observance of World Heart Day 2007 in Kochi on Sunday.

The Cardiological Society of India, Kerala chapter, organised a preventive cardiology clinic at the Heart House in the city. The theme for this year’s observance was ‘Team up for healthy hearts.’ Archbishop Daniel Acharuparampil declared the launch of the Lourdes Heart Foundation at a function organised by the Lourdes Heart Institute, Lourdes Hospital.

A medical camp, attended by more than 200 people, was held on the occasion. The camp was followed by a seminar on heart care in which doctors answered questions put to them. A fund for heart treatment of poor people was also launched. A book ‘Heart Attack Bhayappedathe Jeevikkam’ (How To Live Without Fearing Heart Attacks) written by Dr. Thayil was released. Hundreds of people joined the ‘Heart Walk’ organised by the Lourdes Heart Institute on Saturday. The walk was flagged off by actor Jayasurya.

At a function by the Heart Care Foundation, Kochi, on Saturday, a lifetime achievement award was presented to George Jacob, Head of the Department and chief cardiologist at Caritas Hospital, Kottayam. A painting competition for children and classes for housewives on cooking for better health were also organised by the foundation.
