FOR PEACE: The JCI Yatra in progress at Pudukottai on Sunday. PUDUKOTTAI: For the 20-year-old undergraduate from Raja Duraisingam Government Arts College in Sivagangai, S. Pillappan, it was a new experience -- of meeting people from various walks of life and creating awareness among them about world peace. He is one of the 50 youths who took out a rally by two-wheeler for the noble cause. He is happy with the opportunity he got through the ‘Jaycees Yatra’ organised by the Junior Chamber International India (JCI) Zone XVIII which has jurisdiction over 10 districts including Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar and Pudukottai. A fleet of brand new two-wheelers was enough to kindle the interest of the onlookers en route. The four-day ‘yatra’ that commenced at Kanyakumari on Thursday will culminate at Madurai on Sunday. The rallyists covered scores of villages travelling via Nagercoil, Kovilpatti, Sivakasi, Aruppukootai, Ramanathapuram, Karaikudi, Pudukottai and Sivagangai. “When we explained the objective of the ‘yatra,’, each and every villager appreciated our endeavour,” recalled another undergraduate of the college, R. Prabakaran and the president of the JCI, Sivagangai R. M. K. Ram Prabakar. A brief function was organised under the auspices of the JCI Pudukottai Central and JCI Pudukottai Sangamam to receive the youths. Crackers were burst as part of warm reception and presidents T. Ravichandran and R. Sundararaman outlined the objectives of the yatra. MLA R. Nedunchezhian and Inspector of Police Deivam, who received the youths, appreciated their efforts. S. V. S. Jayakumar honoured the youths. Inspired by the youths, Mr. Nedunchezhian enrolled himself as a JCI member on the occasion, much to the joy of all.
