Puducherry
in line: The NCC cadets practising a drill in Puducherry on Sunday. PUDUCHERRY: For youngsters like Y. Venkat Raghu, the NCC is their means to achieve their dream in life — to don the uniform and work in the Armed Forces. And that is why they are here at the NCC Group Headquarters learning and practising to march, sing and dance in unison. The goal — to be selected for the NCC’s Republic Day selection camp. The cadets — 55 Senior Division Boys, 20 Senior Wing Girls, 6 Junior Division Boys and 6 Junior Wing Girls — have been undergoing rigorous march past practice, range firing, national integration awareness presentation and cultural events from September 24. From October 6, they will take part in another selection camp at Coimbatore. “I like hard work since I think that bettering oneself is an adventure. My grandfather, Y Mutullu Rao, was in the Army and I want to follow in his footsteps and serve the country,” says Venkat, a native of Yanam, who runs a dance group and is pursuing his B.Com final year in Dr. S.R.K. Govt Arts College. The cadets, belonging to NCC Puducherry Group, have been taken in from schools and colleges in Puducherry, Chidambaram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Yanam, Mahe and Karaikal. According to Lt.Colonel A.S. Narayan, Camp Commandant, cadets selected from Coimbatore will attend two more camps in Chennai. Those selected from these camps will attend the Republic Day camp at Delhi. “The cadets have to make a presentation called Flag Area Theme where they have to explain about topics like the Kargil war in 1999, India Vision 2020, Pakistan War in 1971 in Hindi and English.” Best Cadet awardThe students will also have to train to be selected for the Best Cadet award. “The individual cadet has to train to shine in obstacle course, firing, general knowledge quiz, group discussion and individual drill,” explained Lt.Col S. Chander, Training Officer, NCC Group Head Quarters. A blood donation camp will be held on October 1 as part of ‘Voluntary Blood Donation Month’. Deputy Conservator of Forests P. Devaraj will inaugurate a sapling plantation campaign in the afternoon.
