RANIPET: The committee constituted by the State government to evolve an industrial policy has submitted its report to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who will announce it soon, Public Works Department Minister Durai Murugan has said.

He was speaking at a function organised to distribute ‘pattas’ to landless farmers under the fifth phase of the two-acre land scheme here on Sunday.

Mr. Durai Murugan said the committee studied the industrial policies of all States and had given final shape to the policy. Once announced, it would pave way for the development of all the districts, he said.

Airport expansion

The State government would use its good offices with the Centre to take steps to expand the airport in Vellore, taking into consideration the immense business and tourist potential of the district. Ambur, Vaniyambadi and Ranipet have become famous leather product export centres. Businessmen from foreign countries often visited the shoe and leather product manufacturing units in these places, Mr. Durai Murugan said.

The business and tourism potential could be exploited to operate passenger flights from foreign countries to Vellore.

The government would take steps in this direction, he added.

Under the fifth phase of the land scheme, a total of 207.94 acres of land worth Rs.90.9 lakh were distributed to 307 beneficiaries in Vellore district.

This comprised 202.48 acres of encroached land (to 301 beneficiaries) and 5.46 acres of government poromboke land, which was not under encroachment (six beneficiaries).

Besides, 519.92 acres of waste patta land belonging to 139 small and marginal farmers were developed by the Agriculture Department and handed over to them. Vellore Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav presided over the function. District Revenue Officer A. Suganthi welcomed the gathering.

MLAs R. Gandhi (Ranipet), Arul Anbarasu (Sholinghur) and A. Chinnasamy (Pernambut) and district panchayat chairperson Sheela Rajan spoke. P. Chandrasekharan, Additional Personal Assistant (Land) to the District Collector, proposed vote of thanks.
