Turning waste into wealth

Staff Reporter

Differently-abled women of Kulithalai take the lead

KULITHALAI: District administration would encourage self-help groups to gainfully utilise banana fibre and bark, which are available aplenty in the Kulithalai and Krishnarayapuram areas of Karur district, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said here recently.

Launching a new venture of women self-help group, whose members were differently-abled, Mr. Venkatesh said that the SHG would do well to make out of banana tree waste or bark a component of areca nut mug that would fetch them a decent earning.

A private company from Coimbatore would buy the members’ produce entirely for the next three years, he added.

Parivaalaya, a voluntary service organisation, sponsored the SHG.

District Rehabilitation Officer C. Jasmine, Vadhiyam Panchayat president Poonkodi Gauthaman, Parivalaya Director Christopher and others participated in the programme.
