SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh is inching towards becoming a complete knowledge hub with the opening up of new educational institutions and the drop out rate at primary education coming down to just 0.89 percent, claimed an official spokesman. The State Government with a need-based expansion plan has opened up more than 16,000 educational institutions here, he said. He said the State has made tremendous achievement in elementary education during past the few years by way of restructuring the department. Access strengthenedAccess to primary education has been strengthened with the opening of primary schools within a walking distance of 1 to 1.5 km in hilly areas and 1.5 to 3.0 km in other areas of the State almost in every habitation barring a few pockets where the concept of alternative schooling has been implemented under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). For upper primary-level of education there are 4228 notified middle schools in the State. The Government has opened 158 new government primary schools and upgraded 996 primary schools to middle schools during the period from 1st April, 2003 to 31st July, 2007 in the State. On 1st April 2003, there were 10,568 primary schools and 3,332 middle schools in the State that have now been increased to 10,726 primary schools and 4228 middle schools as of 31st July, 2007, claimed the spokesman. The revised curriculum and text books for Class I to V have been developed and introduced in all the government primary schools of the State.
