BJP emerges single largest party in Madikeri CMC

Congress bags nine wards, Janata Dal (Secular) two



Tense: Anxious citizens waiting outside the counting centre in Madikeri on Sunday.

Madikeri: The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single largest party in the elections to the Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC), winning 13 of the 31 wards, followed by the Congress with nine seats, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party one each and independents five. The Janata Dal (Secular) has won two seats.

The winners from the BJP are: I.G. Shiva Kumari (ward No. 3), G.M. Satish Pai (ward No. 5), P.D. Ponnappa (ward No. 8), B.K. Arun Kumar (ward No. 9), Subramani Umesh (ward No. 10), B.P. Pradeep (ward No. 12), H.B. Vijaya Kumar (ward No. 17), K.S. Ramesh (ward No. 19), P.R. Manjula (ward No. 22), B.M. Rajesh (ward No. 23), Vasanta Keshava (ward No. 26), Rani Machaiah (ward No. 28) and B.S. Lata (ward No. 30).

Those who won from the Congress are: M.K. Sunil Nanjappa (ward No. 1), T.U. Mayamma (ward No. 2), M.M. Dharmavati (ward No. 11), K.G. Harish (ward No. 13), H.M. Nanda Kumar (ward No. 15), A.C. Devaiah (ward No. 18), Abdul Razak (ward No. 27), H.R. Dhanalakshmi (ward No. 29) and Aiyappa Madappa (ward No. 31).

Prominent winners among the independents included three rebel BJP candidates, B.R. Pratibha from ward No. four, T.S. Prakash from ward No. six and P.T. Unnikrishnan from ward No. 16.

Others winners among independents are, K.T. Baby Mathew (ward No. 7), president of the Kodagu District Christian Welfare Association, and Muneer Ahmad, who is the former president of the Madikeri Urban Development Authority. Chitra Devaraj (ward 21) won on the BSP ticket while Khateeja (ward 25) won on the Samajwadi party ticket.

The two winners from the Janata Dal (Secular) are, K.U. Ashraf from ward No. 14 and Ashrafuneesa from ward No. 20.

Journalists, who went to cover the counting process were not allowed to enter the counting area by the authorities, forcing them to sit in a dharna in the facade of the Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College where the counting took place.

Later, they were allowed to enter the counting arena.
