BJP sweeps Bellary City Corporation

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: The Bharatiya Janata Party has swept the Bellary City Corporation elections by winning 30 of the total 35 in the civic body.

During the previous term, the BJP, which had won 16 seats, had wrested the reins of municipal administration from the Congress with the support of Janata Dal (Secular) and independents

Contrary to the expectations, Janata Dal (Secular), which had fielded its candidates in 32 wards, has failed to give a tough fight in the elections. The party has won only three seats.

The Congress, which had a firm base in the city and the history of controlling the administration of the local body for several terms in the past, has not opened its account. In the previous elections, Congress had won 11 seats. The Congress had fielded its candidates in 30 wards this time and had entered into an understanding with the BSP by allowing it to contest for four seats and the Communist Party of India one. The BSP has won two seats.
