Hubli-Dharwad
HUBLI: Even though the Krishi Mela, which attracts of lakhs of people from across the State and neighbouring States was still two days away, people thronged the campus of University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS). The reason was that UAS had been selected by the district administration for counting of votes for the elections to Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation. Even before the counting process started, thousands of people had gathered before the main building of the UAS. Although the counting process was slow, supporters of candidates of various parties and their well-wishers waited patiently for hours to know the fate of their candidates. While many chose to stand near the barricades put by the police and were anxiously enquiring with officials and poll agents passing by them about the latest developments, some thought it wise to recline on the lawns around the main building. It was only after 11 a.m. when results started coming in that there was hectic activity. By that time, several of the supporters whose candidates were leading, had made preparations for jubilation. And as the results were announced, “gulal” was sprayed amidst slogan-shouting. Since prohibitory orders had been imposed as a precautionary measure, the supporters were not allowed to conduct processions on the campus and consequently there was no bursting of crackers there. As the day passed, there was shouting of slogans at regular intervals and spraying of “gulal,” garlanding of the winning candidates. Each time a result was announced through the public address system, there was jubilation from the supporters of candidates, while the supporters of losing candidates left the place disheartened.
