DAVANGERE: The Bharatiya Janata Party wrested the Davangere City Corporation from the Congress by winning 22 seats in the 41-member council while the Janata Dal (Secular) won the Harihar City Municipality and Channagiri and Harpanahalli town municipalities. The BJP won the Honnali town municipality. The Congress suffered humiliation in the five civic bodies and emerged as the single largest party in one. This is the first time that the Congress had put up such a bad show in the civic bodies in the district. The Congress, which had highest number of councillors in the previous Davangere City Municipality council (31 councillors of the 35) won just nine wards this time. The BJP, which made headway in the corporation, secured 22 seats which meant that it has a simple majority to rule the corporation. The Janata Dal (Secular), which had won only one seat in the last election, made a considerable progress this time by winning six wards. Four independent candidates, three of them rebel candidates, also registered victory. The BJP won the Honnali town municipality by bagging eight of the 16 seats. The Janata Dal (Secular) won the Channagiri town municipality garnering 12 seats of the 19 seats. In the Harpanahalli town municipality, the Janata Dal (Secular) won 15 of the 27 seats, while the Congress secured 11. BJP put up a poor show by winning a lone seat. The Janata Dal (Secular) won 21 of the 31 seats in the Harihar city municipality while the Congress won seven. In the Jagalur, the Congress emerged as the single largest party by winning six of the 15 seats while the BJP won five and the Janata Dal (Secular) four.
