No clear verdict in Dharwad

Only in Alnavar Town Panchayat, Congress registers clear majority

DHARWAD: Barring Alnavar Town Panchayat, where the Congress has registered a clear majority, no clear verdict has been given by the electorate in the elections to the six civic bodies in Dharwad district.

According the results announced on Sunday, no political party has got clear majority in Navalgund and Annigeri town municipal councils and Kalghatgi and Kundagol town panchayats.

The biggest of the civic bodies in the district, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, which has 67 wards is also heading towards a hung council as the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party have won in almost equal number of wards followed by the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Janata Dal (United), according to the results announced till 8 p.m.

Till 8 p.m., Congress has won in 17 wards, BJP in 15, Janata Dal (S) in nine and Janata Dal (U) in four wards.

Two former mayors and a few former council members have lost the elections for new faces. Among those who lost the polls are former mayors Prakash Kyarakatti of Congress and Firdous Konnur, who had contested as independent candidate after being denied a Congress ticket. Former council members Pratap Chauhan of Congress, S.T. Pujar of Janata Dal (S), Ranga Baddi of BJP and Laxman Uppar of Janata Dal (U) have also lost. The results are as follows. The number in the brackets indicates total number of wards.

Town municipalities: Navalgund (23): Congress 9, BJP 7, Janata Dal (S) 6, Independents 1; Annigeri (23): BJP 7 Janata Dal (S) 7, Congress 4, Independents 5.

Town panchayats: Alnavar (15): Congress 9, Janata Dal (S) 5, Independents 1; Kalghatgi (13): Bahujan Samaj Party 5, Janata Dal (S) 3, Congress 3, BJP 2; Kundagol (15): Janata Dal (U)-6, Janata Dal (S) 4, BJP 2, Congress 2, Independents 1.
