MAKING DEMANDS: A meeting of the Puducherry Construction Workers’ Union in progress in Puducherry on Sunday.— PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Construction Workers’ Union on Sunday demanded a monthly pension of Rs. 1,000 for the workers who had completed 60 years. A resolution adopted at the Oulgaret block-level conference of the union held at Thattanchavadi said the construction workers’ welfare board should come forward to disburse the amount. The conference asked the government in the Union Territory to emulate the Tamil Nadu government in remitting annual membership fee to the welfare board on behalf of the workers. The meet called for steps to ensure that the board met once in three months. The sanctioned staff should be appointed to the board. It asked the government to confer adequate powers to the board to implement its decisions independently. The meet demanded that the recognised trade unions in the construction sector should be permitted to receive membership application forms, get the names of beneficiaries registered, remit the subscription fee and submit the applications seeking assistance. Through another resolution, the conference demanded disbursement of financial assistance for the education of the children of the workers before the completion of the academic year. The conference demanded removal of ineligible members from the board. It asked the government to issue Deepavali prize coupons worth Rs. 1,500 to every member of the board.
