New Delhi
Trains will run at a maximum speed at 135 kmph Check-in facilities will be available at three stations
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has awarded two contracts for construction of the high-speed airport line that will connect the city centre to the Indira Gandhi International Airport. These two contracts will cover civil construction of 7.5 km of the total length of about 19 km of the airport line. While one contract has been awarded to a consortium of M/s Alpine-Samsung-HCC for construction of the 3.9 km long underground section from New Delhi to Talkatora Garden, the second one has been bagged by M/s Afcons for the construction of a 3.6-km underground stretch from Palam Depot to airport. The other contracts for the airport line are under finalisation and would be awarded soon, said DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal on Sunday. “The underground section between New Delhi and Talkatora Garden will have two stations at New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium and tunnel boring machines will be used for 2.6 km of this stretch while the rest will be constructed by cut-and-cover method,” he said. “In the other contract between the airport and Palam Depot there will be one station at National Highway 8 (near the Airports Authority Colony) and the construction will be done by cut-and-cover method.” The link between New Delhi station and Indira Gandhi International Airport comprises underground and elevated sections. There will be three intermediate stations at Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan and NH-8. “The trains will run at a maximum speed at 135 kmph and cover the entire distance in about 16 minutes. Check-in facilities will be available at New Delhi, Shivaji Stadium and Dhaula Kuan stations but baggage booking will be done at the initial stations -- New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium only,” Mr. Dayal added. Initially, eight trains of six-coach formation will be introduced on the line. Half of one coach will be reserved for luggage. The DMRC will also construct the basic civil structure for the airport line and these will then be made available to a concessionaire. “The concessionaire will be responsible for installation of all systems including rolling stock, overhead electrification, track, signalling and telecommunication, ventilation and air-conditioning, automatic fare collection, baggage check-in and handling, depot and other facilities and for commissioning and operating the system for 30 years including construction time,” he added.
