Fractured verdict in Hassan CMC polls

Staff Correspondent

anxious: Hundreds of people gathered outside the Government Arts College in Hassan on Sunday, where counting of votes cast in the urban local bodies elections was in progress.

HASSAN: There was no clear winner in the elections to the Hassan City Municipal Council. Of the 35 wards, the Janata Dal (S) won in 16 and the Congress in 11. While the BJP won in two wards, Independents emerged victorious in six. Among the Independents are two Congress rebels and one Janata Dal (S) rebel (the former CMC president K.T. Prakash Dasappa).

Kamal Kumar, district secretary of the BJP who contested from Shankarapuram ward, was defeated by the Janata Dal (S) candidate.

H.S. Prakash, MLA, speaking to The Hindu, said the overall performance of the Janata Dal (S) in Hassan district was good and it was due to the development works taken up by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna.

In Holenarsipur, the Janata Dal (S) won all the 23 wards.

Two journalists — one from Belur and another from Holenarsipur won the election on the Janata Dal (S) ticket. The BJP suffered a humiliating defeat in the district. It contested 79 seats, but won only in seven.

In Arsikere, though the BJP MLA was in charge of campaign, the party won only one seat.

No party got a majority in the 11-member Alur Town Panchayat.

The Janata Dal (S) won five seats, Congress one and BJP two. Independents bagged three seats.
