Bidar
BIDAR: The Congress has suffered its worst-ever defeat in elections to the urban local bodies in Bidar district. The party lost power in Basavakalyan City Municipal Council and Bhalki and Humnabad town municipal councils, and managed to secure majority only in the newly formed Aurad Town Panchayat. The Congress also did badly in Bidar City Municipal Council elections, winning only 10 of the 35 seats and the Janata Dal (S) did well securing 16 seats. The BJP, which was in power in the last House, suffered a setback winning only seven seats. The Janata Dal (S) with the help of the BJP has a good opportunity to capture power in the CMC. In Humnabad TMC, the Janata Dal (S) failed to secure majority by one seat, and of the total 23 seats, the party managed to get only 11 seats, followed by Congress with nine and BJP with two. One seat was won by an Independent. The Janata Dal (S) can come to power either with the help of BJP or Independents. The BJP, which suffered setbacks in Aurad, Bidar, Basavakalyan and Chitguppa local bodies, however, put up a good show in Bhalki TMC by winning 14 out of the total 23 seats. The Congress could manage only eight seats. The Janata Dal (S) drew a blank and an Independent won the remaining seat. In a stiff contest in Basavakalyan City Municipal Council, the Janata Dal (S) just managed to get a simple majority, winning 17 seats out of the total 31 seats and the Congress, which controlled the body last time, could win only 11 seats and BJP came fourth securing only one seat. Independents got two seats. In the newly formed Chitaguppa TMC, the Janata Dal (S) emerged the single largest party winning nine seats out of the total 23, followed by Congress with eight and BJP with five. An Independent won one seat.
