Sensing relief: Union Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and other Congress leaders being felicitated at a function in Delhi on Sunday.

NEW DELHI: Representatives from unauthorised colonies in Delhi gathered at the Talkatora Stadium here on Sunday to unanimously pass a resolution for issuing a notification for regularisation of these colonies. The gathering also lauded the United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi for bringing in an Ordinance to discontinue the sealing drive in these colonies. Several senior Congress leaders were also present on the occasion.

Intentions clear

Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy said: “The intention of the Government regarding regularisation is clear and an approval for the same will be given immediately after the Master Plan for Delhi-2021 is approved by the Court.” Mr. Reddy said that villages around Delhi formed an integral part of its social and economic structure and their well being were a chief concern of the Government.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said: “The Government will leave no stone unturned for the all-round development of these colonies. A plan is being framed and development will be carried out in a phased manner to improve the living conditions of people. Sewer lines will be laid and a regular supply of potable water will be given priority. A separate board to look into this is being constituted for the first time.”

Benefit of poor

Congress MP Sajjan Kumar said that his party was instrumental in master-minding the regularisation of these colonies. “Whenever the Congress has come to power it has worked towards the benefit of the lower economic classes.”

MP Ajay Maken stated that Delhi could become a world class city only when all sections were equally developed. “Over a quarter of the population is residing in unauthorised colonies and these people cannot be ignored.”

Under the guidance of Unauthorised Colonies Manch convenor Hemchand Goyal, four resolutions were proposed and unanimously passed including one demanding a hastening of the development process in unauthorised colonies.

On the occasion, representatives from different organisations chanted slogans in praise of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and lauded her decision to make Rahul Gandhi the general secretary of the All-India Congress Committee
