Congress, BJP share the spoils in Dakshina Kannada

Congress, BJP share six ULBs in Dakshina Kannada, excluding Mangalore City Corporation

Congress retains power in Ullal


MANGALORE: Voters chose to hand over power to the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party equally in the six urban local bodies in Dakshina Kannada district, excluding the Mangalore City Corporation.

While Congress won in Ullal and Bantwal town municipal councils (TMCs) and in Belthangady Town Panchayat (TP), the BJP secured the Moodbidri and Puttur TMCs and Sullia TP.

In Ullal, the Congress won 17 out of 27 wards to retain power.

Archrival BJP had to be content with six seats followed by Communist Party of India (Marxist) with two.

An Independent and Janata Dal (Secular) won one seat each.

Incidentally, Congress was in power in the previous Ullal Town Panchayat, which had 20 wards.

The State Government recently upgraded it into a TMC and raised the number of wards to 27.

In the Moodbidri TMC, the Janata Dal (S)-BJP combine by winning 12 seats in the 23-member House pipped the Congress-CPI (M) combine to the second spot (11 seats).

While the Janata Dal (S) won eight wards, the BJP won in four.

The Congress won 10 of the 11-seats and its partner, the CPI (M), the remaining one.

In the Bantwal TMC, the Congress supported by two independents bagged 13 out of 23 seats, leaving the BJP-Independent group with 10 seats.

Belthangady TP threw up a decisive result in favour of the Congress with the party bagging seven out of the 11 wards, leaving the BJP with the remaining four seats.

In Sullia TP, the BJP emerged the single largest party, winning nine out of the 18 wards.

The Congress is the second largest party here bagging six seats.

Two Independents and one from the Janata Dal (S) make up the numbers here, according to the tahsildars of respective taluks.
