PUDUKOTTAI: The Communist Party of India and the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have urged the State Government to sanction funds for the implementation of the ‘Coleroon surplus diversion scheme’ to improve irrigation in Pudukottai district.
The scheme, conceived decades ago to divert floodwater in Tiruchi to Pudukottai, has not taken off owing to non-allocation of funds. In a memorandum to the Chief Minister, CPI MLA from Alankudi S. Rajasekaran said though the Government promised to expedite execution of the project after the October/November 2005 floods in Tiruchi, no funds was sanctioned so far. Farmers in the rain-deficit Pudukottai district, he said, were pinning their hopes on the surplus water from Tiruchi. Though the Mettur dam filled to its capacity several times this year, he pointed out, the surplus drained into the sea. The project, estimated to cost Rs. 290 crore, would prevent the water going waste, so it should be sanctioned at the earliest, he said.
AIADMK MLA from Pudukottai R. Neduchezhian said the scheme should be implemented immediately to tone up irrigation.
