JD(S) gets majority in Mulbagil, Srinivaspur TMCs

BJP wins all the 23 seats of

Malur TMC

KOLAR: The Janata Dal (Secular) gained the upper hand while the Congress suffered a big set back in Kolar and Chickballapur districts in the urban civic bodies’ elections, the results of which were declared on Sunday. Though the Bharatiya Janata Party did not fare well in both the districts, it created a record by capturing all the 23 seats of Malur town municipal council in Kolar district.

Rebel Congress candidates and supporters of some leaders played spoilsport in Kolar. Though the JD(S) and the Congress are on equal standing winning 45 wards each in Kolar district, Congress is not in a position to capture power in many of the urban bodies. In Kolar City Municipal Council, which has 35 wards, 15 each from the Congress and rebels and independents, supported by Bangalore Rural Zilla Panchayat member Varthur R. Prakash, emerged victorious. The JD(S) registered absolute majority in Mulbagil and Srinivaspur Town Municipal Councils. In the body of 27 members in Mulbagil, it succeeded in winning 15 seats, while the Congress, the BJP and independents registered victory in four seats each.

Of the 23 seats in Srinivaspur TMC, JD(S) won 16, the Congress six and the BJP one seat. Congress could scrape through Banngarpet TMC by winning 11 seats in the 23-member council. The BJP sprung a surprise by winning all the 23 seats of Malur TMC thus wiping out all other major rivals like JD(S) and Congress. Political analysts say this is an unique victory in the State. In Chickballapur district also, the JD(S) was supremecy.

The Bagepalli TMC saw nine Congress and six CPI(M) candidates win.
