BPCL regains crown

BANGALORE: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) emerged champion of the State Super Division league hockey championship after a 2-2 draw with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) here on Sunday.

IOCL had needed a win to retain the title, while the 2005 winner BPCL needed just a draw to regain the crown.

Hamsa Mujtba put IOCL ahead in the eighth minute before Gurpreet Singh restored parity in the 21st minute. After the break, Tyron Pereira put IOCL ahead (36th) but Gurpreet levelled the score within two minutes.

The draw gave BPCL 22 points (seven wins in eight matches) while IOCL tallied 20 points (with six wins and two draws).

Fortis with a tally of 14 points claimed the third spot on goal difference. Army Red needed to score 11 goals in its match against Canara Bank for the third spot but could only win 8-2.

Chittranjan Singh (12th,34th and 56th) scored thrice for Army Red while Dhananjay Madik (7th & 24th) had a double. Sunil Ekka (16th), P.Kahka (36th) and Anil Kumar Ekka (53rd) also scored for Army Red.

Kaveriappa (2nd) and Varun (66th) scored for Canara Bank.
