Mumbai: Over the last week Richard Gasquet — pronounced Gas-Kay — has riveted attention on him for more reasons than one in the Kingfisher Airlines Mumbai Open tennis tournament. The 21-year-old Frenchman billed as the favourite has been brisk and business-like dispatching four opponents in under an hour on the hard court. Gasquet has memorable victories over Roger Federer two years ago at Monte Carlo (the Swiss has dropped just two sets to the World No. 14 since in six meetings) and Andy Roddick in a punishing five-setter at the Wimbledon in 2007. Gasquet has brought into play power and precision to deal with rivals, but all his interaction with the media at the C.K. Nayudu Hall here has been marked by sobriety. What really has stood out has been his response to success and appreciation for the opponent. He had good words for his childhood hero, Fabrice Santoro, who had no answers on the court playing against a man, 13 years younger to him. “He’s my friend, training partner and I knew his game. But he’s a talented player, capable of anything and could have been difficult for me. Hence I had to play solid tennis. I practised for a week in France and was prepared to do well here, but Rochus has the reputation of possessing the best backhand in the World,” said Gasquet.
