Residents plan anti-plastic drive Neighbourhood watch

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Ernakulam District Residents’ Association Apex Council (EDRAAC) is preparing to make the third anniversary meeting a grand event. The function will be held in the first week of November. Different committees for the coordination of the event will be formed at the next monthly meeting of Police and Residents Associations Initiative in District Ernakulam (PRIDE), said P. Rangadasa Prabhu, president of EDRAAC.

All member associations have been asked to clear wild foliage in open areas before October 10. The drive will begin on October 2. Awareness drive will also be taken up against use of plastic, said Mr. Prabhu. The EDRAAC is also planning a platform for interaction with association representatives and officials of Kerala Water Authority.

This will be formed after the commissioning of the Drinking Water Augmentation project, formerly known as HUDCO project, on October 5. This forum could be used to pass on information about illegal tapping of water and also to address common issues faced by residents, said Mr. Prabhu.

Vytilla, Palarivattom and Thammanam-Ponnurunni regional committees of EDRAAC has decided to take up an extensive drive against use of plastics. Members will visit all houses and shops and people will be made aware of the ill-effects of plastic bags.

A meeting, attended by N.A. Mani, chairman of Kochi Corporation standing committee on health, was held recently to finalise the aspects of the drive. Narayana Asan Road Residents Association distributed jute bags among its members. Rice Research Road Residents Association held classes for its members on paper bag manufacturing. A centre for paper bag manufacturing is being planned by the women’s wing of the Association.
