Tamil Nadu
Autorickshaw commuters’ humiliations and exploitation continue unabated. The drivers do not want to comply with the norms and rates stipulated by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It is amusing to note that no action is being taken by the Government to rein in them. It is an open secret that there are thousands of unauthorised autorickshaws plying in the city. A very large number of autorickshaws do not have silencers. Even though we have in Traffic Police Department many officers of calibre, vision and dedication, the plight of commuters continues. C. Jayachandran Vepery Interaction with peopleIt is to be appreciated that Corporation reminds the public in March and September of payment of taxes and charges. It is equally important for the civic body to pay attention to civic and sanitation matters. It can hold meetings in the respective zones at least once in two months, in which councillors are to be present. Public may be informed of the date and venue of a meeting. The forum will help promote a friendly relationship among the people, elected representatives, officials and staff. It will also help tax payers air their problems such as bad roads, bad water supply, burning of street lights etc. I.S. Srinivasan Vetri Nagar High chargesThe Metropolitan Transport Corporation is operating delux air-conditioned and express buses. .But the charges are heavy. Hence, I request the MTC to run more ordinary services for the regularly travelling poor and middle class people and daily wage earners. I request that my suggestion may be taken into consideration. M. Krishnaswamy Madambakkam Plea to MTCI request the MTC to consider the following suggestions in view of the increasing population in Mugappair. 1. Extending 70K bus via Eri Scheme till Mugappair West. 2. Extending 48A bus upto Mugappair West. 3. Extending 20A and K70 up to Nolambur as there is only one bus under each route. 4. Resume 74J from Mugappair West to Nethaji Nagar which was stopped earlier. 5. Resume 104J from Mugappair West to Tollgate which was stopped earlier. These measures, if implemented, will definitely yield good profit to the MTC. N. Venkatesh Mugappair (W) Extn Needed: tarred roadsIn 19th ward of Ambattur Municipality, roads in G. N.G. Colony, IInd and III Streets need to be tarred. These roads are located near the Ambattur railway station. There are an export garment factory and working women hostel on these roads. During the rainy days these roads are flooded with rainwater, causing problems to road-users. It is unfortunate that even after 25 years, the municipal officials have not taken steps to provide tar roads. At least now, will they act? T. Gunaseelan Ambattur Railway-MTC cooperationThis refers to the article “Railway-MTC cooperation can be put on track” in The Hindu dated 11.9. 07. Union Minister of State for Railways K. Velu was correct to say that “the system will not be viable since MTC services were operated on the main road.” In fact, the scenario prevails in the Beach-Tambaram sector also. Except the Tambaram station, no railway station is easily approachable to bus commuters. Take the example of Guindy. The bus-stop there far away from the rail station. Instead of a petrol pump and a wineshop, there should have been a bus-bay near the platform. It will make the surrounding area of the rail station more attractive. Efforts should be made to make rail journey more passenger-friendly. Enough number of ticket counters should be set up. Sometimes, one has to stand in the queue to buy tickets for more than 15 minutes for a 10-minute journey. In the Mambalam station, exit and entry through the Ranganathan Street are oversaturated. Instead, the other end of the platform can be connected to the T.Nagar bus stand by foot overbridge. This measure will make the ‘unified-ticketing and multi-nodal transport system’ successful for existing and future MRTS project also. We can take a cue from the Andheri and Bandra stations in Mumbai. S. Ghosh, Adyar Traffic problemTraffic jam at the Kathippara junction is every minute’s problem for the vehicles entering Chennai. The government agencies involved in the construction of the multi-level bridge at this junction say that this problem will be solved as soon the construction work is over and the bridge is put to use. More than three years have gone, yet the construction of bridge is still going on. The slow progress of the work is attributed to a heavy traffic on the road and execution of work at night alone. When the railway takes up gauge conversion, it altogether suspends traffic on the line till the work is completed. Similarly if road traffic is suspended on the route for sometime, the work could be speeded. But road traffic cannot altogether be suspended on this route as it is the gateway to Chennai on the G.S.T. road. However, buses going to the Koyambedu bus terminus could be diverted near Pallavaram via Kunrathur and Ekkaduthangal. G. Pichai, Chromepet Panic in crossing roadWe, residents of Devanathan Street, Mandaveli near the Mandaveli bus depot, often panic while crossing our road. City buses are passing through this road to reach Mylapore/ Luz Corner from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The LSS buses with route numbers 21-G and 1 do not have stop on the Devanathan Street. Only the ordinary buses halt here and the express buses find it difficult to overtake since the width of the road is narrow. The modified new buses cover the full road, sometimes climbing onto the platforms. As a matter of fact, the elders, school-going children and women could not cross the road easily. Moreover, lot of two-wheelers, tempos, and cars are also on the run. We suggest that the express buses which do not stop on the Devanathan Street can be diverted to the adjacent Sringeri Mutt Road which is broad. , Gemini Shyam Sunder, Mandaveli Poondi reservoirI visited the Poondi reservoir (Satyamurthi Sagar) in Tiruvallur district recently with my brother’s son and was very much depressed to see the poor condition of the parks, colony etc. surrounding the reservoir. I am a former employee of the State PWD and worked there in the early 60’s. I had stayed in the Poondi Colony in quarters. During that period even film shootings took place for there were beautiful parks with statues here and there and with fountains and illuminations at night. But the present condition is quite miserabl. Since the Poondi reservoir is quite near Tiruvallur and Chennai city, it can be turned into a picnic or tourist spot with necessary amenities such as accommodation for stay, frequent bus services from Tiruvallur and Chennai on weekends, restaurant facilities, boating. This reservoir can be made attractive on the lines of the “Vaigai Dam” near Madurai, which attracts a lot of tourists. V. Ramakrishnan, Thiruvanmiyur Manhole issueSeveral sewerage manhole doors on the Devaraga Nagar Main Road, Sri Ramar Street, Veera-Ma-Munivar Street etc., in North Saligramam area (Division No. 129 of Corporation of Chennai) have been completely closed and buried deep below the road surface, while re-laying roads recently. It is a pity that the well-laid roads have to be dug up again to locate the existence of manhole doors whenever there is a block in sewerage flow, which happens quite often. Such a situation could have been avoided, had there been better co-operation between Metrowater and Corporation officials. I earnestly appeal to the officials concerned to mark the location of the manholes sufficiently early to prevent such occurrences. C. Ramamoorthy, President, Saligramam North Residents’ Welfare Association, Saligramam
