Open the road

The Coimbatore Airport

has a significant role in

the development of

business activities in the western region. From

SITRA Junction to the airport entrance one-km road is used by air passengers. There are

many housing colonies on both sides of the road and many people use the road. Now owing to security reasons only the airport people are allowed to

use the road and many

areas are fenced. A

parallel road was laid by

the local authorities many years ago, but the road is damaged and deserted. School children and women find it difficult to use the road. Many school buses

ply on the road at their

own risks. If any VIPs

arrive at the airport,

this road is used as a parking lot. The road should be widened on both sides and the airport authorities should open the road

for the public.

Misuse of domestic LPG

Domestic LPG is in great demand now. But many vehicles are run on LPG. They have a kit to transfer gas from domestic cylinders to the vehicle tanks which is very dangerous. There are not many gas filling stations. To avoid use of domestic cylinders commercially sufficient gas filling stations should be opened and frequent checks should be conducted.

Parking lots

This refers to the report ‘Efforts on for multi-tier parking lots in the city’ (Sept 26). Corporation has finally realised there is an urgent need for multi-tier parking lots at various key locations in the city. The parking lot close to the Town Hall and the one on Raja Street on the old ‘Cholakkadu Hospital’ site seem to be ideal for conversion into multi-tier lots. The Corporation has to identify suitable sites near the railway station and Gandhipuram and

Ukkadam busstands too.

Hockey’s glory

Cricket has attracted more and more people as organisers and sponsors and become a big business earning huge money. It has attracted players as it offers them handsome dividends. Moreover, cricket has a colonial past and legacy. Because of all these, our national game hockey has taken a back seat. Until a few years ago, India had the reputation of being champions in hockey. With no proper organisation and management, hockey has not received the attention it deserved. The mode of selection and training of the hockey players and remuneration to them were poor. National players had to travel in the third class compartment, eat in roadside eateries and stay in dharmasalas. Dhanraj Pillai did not get the recognition he deserved because he is from the south. However, things have changed and hockey is now under the Sports Ministry. The recent win of Asia Cup is a feather in our hockey team’s cap. If hockey gets the same encouragement and sponsorship as cricket gets, it can regain its pristine glory.

Lalu’s lollipops

Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav says railways makes profits without increasing passenger fare. Is it really so? 1. Car parking charges which was Rs. 5 was enhanced by 100 per cent. Was it to benefit contractors or ensure better services? 2. Railways used to collect R. 6.50 extra for booking a return ticket. Now it has been increased to Rs. 15. Why? 3. Earlier if a ticket was cancelled the railways deducted Rs. 20 as cancellation charges. Now it is Rs. 60 and nobody will cancel tickets from Coimbatore to Salem for the cancellation charges will be more than the ticket fare? 4. Nearly 25 to 30 per cent of the tickets available for reservation have been transferred to Tatkal, i.e. payment of Rs. 30 more as charges. Railways is doing a yeoman service to the public, indeed!

RP patients

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an incurable eye disease. RP patients should have a chance of meeting each other and expressing views on difficulties and problems they face in daily life. They should be able to shed their distress and find ways to lead a regular life. Interaction and discussions will help overcome their difficulties. An association of RP patients will yield better results.

Airport woes

Coimbatore Airport is getting crowded owing to frequent flights. The front corridor is now occupied by counters of various airline companies and coffee vending machines.

There are no chairs. Old people who come to receive and see off their friends and relatives have to stand for a long time. The front corridor should be extended by 40 feet so that more counters can be located and ample chairs provided.

Women’s status

The statement by the chairperson of Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board at a seminar held in Coimbatore that “…women have become secondary citizens” needs an indepth consideration. Speakers at the seminar harped on the theme that our society denied women their due rights. This assumption is erroneous. The present status of women is not thrust on them by society. Advertisements in print media or visual media exploit female figures irrespective of whether or not they are relevant to the material advertised. Why should models pose for advertisements that demean women.
