Chalking out plans: A meeting of residents of Bhaktavatsalam Nagar of Alandur Municipality in progress on Sunday. — TAMBARAM: Residents of Bhaktavatsalam Nagar of Alandur Municipality on Sunday decided to launch a series of protests, including road blocks on Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road if the subway to replace the railway level crossing near Meenambakkam railway station was not completed expeditiously. Residents of B.V. Nagar and office-bearers of civic groups in the locality met at the Government Primary School. The project was started in 2002 as part of the gauge conversion scheme between Tambaram and Chennai beach. It was to be executed by the Southern Railway and the State Highways Department to replace the railway level crossing (LC No. 19). The State Highways’ share is about Rs. 11 crore and the Southern Railway, about Rs. 4 crore, officials said. The Southern Railway has completed its work, including installation of concrete boxes that are about 5 metres in height and 7.5 metres wide. However, the Highways Department is unable to proceed with the project as they require about 11,000 square metres of land for constructing ramps, the officials said. Land required for the project belonged to the Ministry of Defence. Scheduled for completion by 2003, they were unable to take up rest of the work as the Ministry did not hand over the land to them, the officials added. On Sunday, the residents blamed both the State and Central governments for the delay. They criticised the Ministry for its reluctance to part with the land. Pointing out at a private car showroom located on Defence land adjacent to the subway site, the residents said land came on a platter to the corporate. But the Ministry took years to sanction a portion of land that could benefit several thousand families. The residents recalled that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi during his visit to Delhi in June urged the Defence Ministry to part with about 30 acres of land so that the State government could implement projects, including bridges and subways in Pazhavanthangal, Meenambakkam and Pallavaram, apart from the Tambaram bus terminus.
