Death toll in floods rises to 51

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The death toll in the floods that have ravaged 12 districts has risen to 51, though there was some improvement in the situation in all but one district. Nearly 3.2 million people have been affected. The situation in Paschim Medinipur in south Bengal, where the Rupnaryanpur river has breached embankments along certain stretches, remains grim.

Over 3.9 lakh people were sheltered in 1,995 relief camps, State Finance Minister, Asim Dasgupta said. The State government that had sanctioned Rs. 70 crore for relief and restoration, released another Rs.8 crore, Dr. Dasgupta said.

Medical teams were despatched to the affected areas to prevent the outbreak of any epidemic of water-borne diseases.
